TELEVISION IN OUR DEPARTMENT IN 1958

We weren't always known as the Department of Television-Radio-Film-Theatre. In fact until May 2000 we were the Theatre Arts Department and had been since 1974. In 1958 we were the Speech and Drama Department and while radio had been a part of the department since 1948, television, as a course of instruction was very new. So it was no wonder that in April, 1958 we made local headlines:

So what did the well-dressed television student look like in those nascent days?

How many guys does it take to aim a really large camera? No digital for these students. This is the audio studio in Hugh Gillis Hall that in 1963 would become KSJS-FM. This is the control room. We still use it today. We are no longer black and white, by the way.

You are probably asking yourselves, "where are the women?" Television in 1958 was still in its geek stages and for whatever reason, the geeks came, saw and conquered.
