The Founding of KSJS-FM

Two elements are needed to put a radio station on the Air - A Federal Communications Commission, FCC, License and Money. In the final half of 1962, a small group of Speech and Drama department faculty and students made this happen.

Professor Clarence Flick began several years prior to 1963 to obtain the FM License, getting the support of the right combination of legal, engineering and San Jose State College (now University) people. The license was approved August, 1962, and KSJS went on the air February 11, 1963.

From its original 85 watts on Walquist Library to a directional 1500 watts from Coyote Peak, the station coverage area has grown to cover the entire South Bay

Early programming on KSJS consisted of a combination of locally produced music, news, and sports, and canned programming from the National Association of Educational Broadcasters.

The Journalism Department produced a Daily Newscast

Due to interference with the 90.7 station at Berkeley, KSJS-FM changed its broadcasting channel from 90.7 to 90.5 in 1992.

In 2000, the directional antenna and power increase was approved.

In 2002 a new Wheatstone master control board was installed, making the station audio chain mostly digital.

After 40 years, KSJS-FM remains in the department of TV-Radio-Film-Theatre
