The Student Touring Ensemble Program

A part of the theatre program for 10 years, S.T.E.P. is an outreach program, our road show presenting the diversity of SJSU and theatre to local schools and organizations.

Words, Words, Words: Will's Way

What are the origins of the English language? Five high school students explore Shakespeare's many contributions to modern English.   A hip, humorous, action-packed show that weaves in modern slang and rap with the words and phrases first found in Shakespeare's plays. Suitable for Grades 7 through 12.

California: A Common Thread

Make late 19th-century United States history come alive for students with this highly engaging exploration of 19th -century immigrant experiences in California. Based on research conducted at the National Archives and at the Mission Archive at Santa Clara University, this production joins ethnographic texts with textiles to make for a compelling and informative presentation for the students. Suitable for Grades 4 through 8.

Here, There, and Everywhere

Hop abroad the Rainbow Express and take a ride with Ooh, Blah, Dee and JB as they celebrate the never   ending journey into a   child's imagination .   Words, songs, and dances full of vivid images and fun help children explore their own worlds of fantasy and creativity. Suitable for Grades K through 3.

Founded in 1995 by San Jose State University Professor Buddy Butler, this multicultural company is committed to providing a theatre experience that is much more than entertainment. Each production attempts to address both social and political issues facing young people today. One of the main goals of the company is to promote productions reflecting an ethnically diverse society to enlighten, enhance, and educate youth of a variety of cultural backgrounds through theatre. Each production also has a firm foundation in literature, thus promoting learning and literacy.

S.T.E.P. Member Ramon Johnson with Yolanda King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., for whom our library is named.

S.T.E.P. prides itself on programs focused on racial and ethnic diversity.

The material presented by STEP is aimed at elementary and secondary schools primarily, but also extends to college and university audiences as well as the general community. STEP offers these thought provoking performances to enhance the traditional curriculum in a fresh and creative manner. Study guides to support pre- and post-performance discussions are provided by STEP.
