Get Involved! Find Success!

Every semester we are asked: "How can I get more involved in the department?" As you may have already guessed, we are not your ordinary show-up-for-lectures-go-home kind of place. Our very best students, the ones who work in the entertainment industry, the ones who end up in Hollywood, the ones who work in local stage, all have one thing in common: They got involved and stayed involved in the department. Our most successful graduates leave here having been on KSJS, acted on stage, worked on films and wrote a screenplay or two. Here are just a few ways to get involved, meet people, learn new things, find a career, find an audience. Check back often for new ways to get involved.

TAKE AN ACTING CLASS: Whether you seek a career in performance, or you just want to learn a bit about the craft of acting, take TA 5. There are 10 sections, all taught by experienced actors. TA 5 counts as lower division GE in Area C1, Arts.

MORE GE CLASSES: Theatre Appreciation: TA 10, Contemporrary Theatre: TA 127, Media in Society: RTVF 110, World Cinema: RTVF 188, all GE.

DO RADIO: KSJS-FM is our 24/7 live-all-the-time radio voice and you would be surprised how much performing and producing for radio is similar to that for film and theatre. There are 5 classes for being involved in KSJS: RTVF 94, RTVF 150, RTVF 155, RTVF 194, RTVF 192

WATCH AND LISTEN: Come to our plays and film screenings. Listen to KSJS-FM. Visit the department Web site every day.

LEARN TO WRITE: There is nothing in the Entertainment Industry that is valued more than a good script. We have four excellent classes in script writing for film and stage: RTVF 175, RTVF 129, TA 128, TA 129. But we also sponsor the yearly Crain Writing Competition and the winners get cash and recognition. In the Fall the Crain winners will have public readings of their scripts. You can attend.

AUDITION FOR OUR PLAYS: Every film star or director will tell you that he or she "started in college theatre." We hold open auditions during the first week of the semester. Audition information will be posted on this Web site and on the call board in Hugh Gillis Hall.

SEE FILMS: RTVF 82, RTVF 166 (2), RTVF 181, RTVF 188. Five different film studies classes, A Century of Cinema!
