New in the Major? New in the Department?
Here are the Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Hello, let me introduce myself. I am Mike Adams, the Chair of the Department of Television, Radio, Film and Theatre. We are one of the most interesting departments on campus, offering a BA in Radio-TV-Film, a BA in Theatre Arts, minors in both, and an MA in Television, Film Radio and Theatre.

Prior to every Semester there are several questions that I am continuously asked by incoming students, both new Frosh and transfer students, SJSU students wanting to change their major to RTVF or Theatre Arts. Here are the questions I am most asked, and their answers:

Q - "I've been accepted into the RTVF major and I need classes. What do I take?"
A - There are 3 classes you need to take first: RTVF 77, RTVF 82, RTVF 91. Get an advisor soon.

Q - "I'm going into the Theatre Arts major. What classes do I take?"
A - TA 51A, B, C, TA 5, TA 10, TA 11. Do these first, but get an advisor.

Q - "I've heard I can be on KSJS-FM. What do I have to do?"
A - Sign up for RTVF 94 and RTVF 192. Come to the first meeting of the semester, Tuesdays at 6pm, HGH 103.

Q - "Is any of this good advice written down anywhere?"
A - Outside the main office, HGH 100, you can help yourself to all our printed materials.

Q - "I am far, far away. Can you mail stuff about your majors to me?"
A - Sure. Send me an email and request program information. Click Here to email

Q - "Is there an on-line list of major and minor requirements?"
A - Here is a link to the Official SJSU degree information and the on-line catalogue.

Q - "How and when do I meet with my advisor in person? Who is my advisor?"
A - Have an advisor assigned to you and that is why a personal visit to HGH 100 is important. I am available every day to answer your questions. The best way for me is e-mail.

Q - "Are there any GE classes that also count in the major?"
A - You can take TA 5 or TA 10, lower GE, C1, or TA 100w, TA 127, RTVF 110, RTVF 188. You are allowed to "double count" TA 100w and one other GE class in the major. meaning that a GE class can count both as GE and a major requirement or elective. See your advisor several times a year to get the latest degree information.

Q - "How can I get the most immediate, quickest answer to an academic question?"
A - Simple. Look at the department Web and if you cannot find the answer you need, send me an e-mail. I answer these everyday. It's the best way.

Q - "Are there any new classes I can take next semester?"
A - Yes, a list is just a click away.

Q - "Is there any really, really good final academic advice you can give me?"
A - Yes. Two things: first, if you are an RTVF major take TA 5. We have great people teaching all of the 10 sections, professional actors and directors, and if you want to be in film or write screen plays, knowing about acting is really important. Second, take the WST, Writing Skills Test, early. Without it you cannot take writing classes, or upper division GE like TA 100w, RTVF 110, RTVF 188 or TA 127.
